Hello, my name is Karen and I am the owner of Made on Anglesey. I learned to sew at quite a young age and was initially taught by my mother. I used to sew all my dolls clothes and at the age of nine I was given the family's treadle machine (as my mother had upgraded to an electrical one!).
I also learned at school and for my 18th birthday my parents gave me my first electric sewing machine. I studied sewing all the way through secondary school, but after completing an A-level in dress and design, the options to take it further were very limited in the 1980's. I left school and gained a degree in biology instead. After a meandering career as a biologist, nurse, health visitor, medical researcher, teacher and lecturer, sewing has always existed as a part of my life. From sewing my children's clothes (including last minute requests for the upcoming school play!), making home furnishings, upholstery and my own clothes to making gifts for friends and family, the sewing machine has never been far away. Over the years, I've also sewn on commission for others, which has always been through word of mouth. After years of both friends and colleagues telling me that I should do this for a living, I have finally taken the plunge and set up Made on Anglesey. The time is right to now combine my love of sewing and teaching and to use my experiences to inspire others.
I am fully bilingual and workshops can be run through the medium of Welsh or English.
